Contract signed for widening of Tolo Highway between Ma Wo and Tai Hang

The Highways Department signed a $2,382 million contract with Gammon Construction Limited today (February 24) for widening of the Tolo Highway between Ma Wo and Tai Hang.

Under this project, the 3.5-kilometre-long road section of the Tolo Highway will be widened from a dual three-lane carriageway to a dual four-lane carriageway. The works will also include provision of hard shoulders, construction of eight vehicular bridges, modification/demolition of five existing bridges, and associated environmental mitigation measures, drainage, traffic aids, road lighting, landscaping and geotechnical works.

Speaking at the contract signing ceremony, the Director of Highways, Mr Wai Chi-sing, said the works aimed to improve the existing traffic congestion on Tolo Highway.

"We expect that upon completion of the entire project in end-2014, the road will be able to meet the anticipated traffic growth in the northeast part of New Territories and cross-border traffic."

"The contract signed today is expected to create about 1,500 jobs during its construction period."

The entire Tolo Highway widening project covers a 5.9km-long expressway section between the Island House Interchange and Tai Hang.  It is implemented through two civil engineering contracts and one traffic control and surveillance system contract. The works for widening of a 2.4km-long expressway section between the Island House Interchange and Ma Wo under the first civil engineering contract already commenced in August 2009. The contract for the traffic control and surveillance system is scheduled for tendering later this year.
