Accident of workers falling into the sea from HyD's Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Link Road work site

The Highways Department (HyD) today (March 29) said that three foreign male workers accidentally fell into the sea from a construction site of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Hong Kong Link Road project at around 3pm today. One of the workers was rescued. As at 6.30pm, the two other workers were still missing. The rescue operation by the relevant departments is underway.

The construction site is under "Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Link Road - Section between HKSAR Boundary and Scenic Hill" (HyD contract no. HY/2011/09). A dual three-lane viaduct connecting the HZMB Main Bridge at the HKSAR Boundary and Scenic Hill on the Airport Island is being constructed under the project. The contractor is Dragages-China Harbour-VSL Joint Venture. The accident occurred at a section of the viaduct outside Tai O near the HKSAR Boundary. The structural works for the viaduct were completed earlier. At the time of the accident, the workers were dismantling a temporary working platform underneath the viaduct, which was about some 3 metres above the sea level.

During the accident, two other male workers who were working on the deck surface of the viaduct sustained slight injuries. All injured workers were admitted to hospital for treatment. The relevant works in the construction site have been suspended.

The HyD is highly concerned about the incident and saddened to learn that the workers went missing after falling into the sea. The HyD is fully co-operative in the rescue and investigation of the accident by the relevant departments.

The HyD and the contractor are actively following up the incident. The HyD has asked the contractor to contact the families of the workers to provide all necessary assistance.
