Beautification works brighten up highway structures and subways
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Highways Department (HyD) today (June 28) said that it has introduced thematic and chromatic designs in association with safety and structural maintenance works for the beautification of highway structures and subways at bustling transport nodes. The beautification works cover existing flyovers and their columns, footbridges, internal walls, covers and ceilings of subways and more with a view to creating a refreshing image for highway structures and subways.
By applying the design concept of "Appreciate. Life. Colours", thematic designs with featured graphics have been developed to reflect the uniqueness of the surroundings at individual districts. Thematic design has been adopted in eight beautification projects, namely "Leisure in Greenery, Shau Kei Wan", "From Land to Sea, Sham Shui Po", "Boundless Vistas, Sau Mau Ping", "Wandering in the Woods, Ma On Shan", "Colourful Blessings, Yuen Long", "Country Delight, Fanling", "Chasing Dreams, Tseung Kwan O" and "Blissful Bauhinia, Tuen Mun". For chromatic design, different schemes have been developed through site analysis with a view to choosing suitable colour palettes to showcase decorative images and to harmonise the existing structures with their surroundings. A total of 23 chromatic design projects have been completed. By June, 20 footbridges, eight subways, seven flyovers, one underpass and one retaining wall had been refurbished in this series of beautification works. Location details are set out in the Annex.
Information about the eight thematic designs with explanation of the design concepts and photos of the bridges and subways has been uploaded to the HyD's website (www.hyd.gov.hk/en/district_and_maintenance/landscape/beautification_index.html). QR codes linking to the website are displayed at the sites for ease of reference.
