HyD's response to media enquiries on accident in Ho Man Tin site
Regarding media enquiries on the accident in a site in Ho Man Tin, the Highways Department (HyD) today (October 15) responded as follows:The contractor of the HyD accidentally dropped an excavator into a shaft in the course of a lifting operation at a works site in Ho Man Tin last night (October 14). No one was injured in the incident. The subject contract is "Central Kowloon Route - Central Tunnel" (Contract Number: HY/2018/08) and the main contractor is Bouygues Travaux Publics.
Before each lifting operation, the contractor will follow the Code of Practice for Safe Use of Cranes to fence off all lifting zones properly and prohibit the workers from entering the lifting operation area. As such, no one was injured in this incident. The HyD has always attached great importance to site safety and deployed resident site staff to supervise the works carried out by the contractors. After the incident, the resident site staff have immediately suspended the relevant lifting work and reported the incident to the HyD.
Being highly concerned about the incident, the HyD has instructed the contractor to suspend the relevant works in the shaft immediately and has been taking follow-up actions. The HyD will assist the Labour Department in carrying out investigation to find out the cause of the incident and propose relevant improvement measures.
